Wes and Melinda were visiting Laguna Beach for a weekend getaway at Montage Laguna Beach, but Wes had something special planned that Melinda had no idea was coming.
They already have two children together, and Wes was so excited to take this next step in their lives as a family.
Since they were visiting from out of town, Wes needed someone local who knew the area and could help him plan everything from afar. I helped him choose a beautiful ocean overlook near Montage Laguna Beach, with the Treasure Island coastline stretching out behind them.
And Melinda's reaction when he got down on one knee? So genuinely happy and emotional. Exactly the kind of moment I love photographing.
Planning a Surprise Proposal at Montage Laguna Beach From Out of Town
Planning a surprise proposal somewhere you're unfamiliar with can feel like a lot, especially when you're coordinating everything from out of town.
The Montage and Treasure Island area is one of my favorite places for proposals in Laguna Beach. Between the ocean overlooks, grassy bluffs, coastal walking paths, and Treasure Island Beach below, there are so many beautiful options within walking distance of the resort.
But finding a pretty location is only part of the planning.
For Wes, I helped narrow down the exact spot, choose the right timing, and coordinate where he needed to bring Melinda and where I would be photographing from.
That's one of the biggest advantages of working with a local Laguna Beach proposal photographer. I know these coastal overlooks firsthand and understand how the lighting, positioning, and little logistical details can make all the difference.
I've photographed other surprise proposals around Montage Laguna Beach, too, and each experience helps me guide my clients toward the location that best fits what they're envisioning.
Wes didn't need to scout locations himself or figure everything out when he arrived. We had a plan in place before their trip, so when the moment came, all he had to do was show up, propose, and enjoy it.
An Emotional Sunset Proposal Overlooking Treasure Island
As the sun started to set, Wes got down on one knee with the beautiful Laguna Beach coastline behind him.
Melinda was completely surprised, and her reaction was everything.
She was so genuinely happy and emotional, and I loved photographing those first few seconds as she realized what was happening.
The ocean and Treasure Island coastline made such a beautiful backdrop, but what I love most about these photographs is her reaction.
Nothing forced or staged. Just a really happy moment between two people who have already built so much of a life together.
Knowing they have two children and that this was the beginning of another chapter for their family made it even more meaningful.
Candid Engagement Photos Along the Montage Coastline
After the proposal, we spent some time walking along the coastal paths near Montage Laguna Beach, taking photos as Wes and Melinda enjoyed their first moments being engaged.
This is always one of my favorite parts of a proposal session.
The nerves are gone, the surprise has happened, and couples can finally relax and take everything in.
My photography style is candid and natural, with just enough direction to help couples feel comfortable in front of the camera. I love creating beautiful portraits, but I also want the laughter, the little looks at each other, and the moments when they're completely wrapped up in what's happening.
I want couples to actually enjoy this time together, not feel like they're spending the entire evening posing for photographs.
Those genuine moments are often the photos I love most.
Twilight Engagement Photos at Treasure Island Beach
As daylight faded, we made our way toward Treasure Island Beach for more engagement portraits.
I love how much variety this part of Laguna Beach offers. You can start with sweeping ocean views from the bluffs, walk along the landscaped coastal paths, and then end up right by the water for an entirely different setting.
By twilight, the light was softer and the atmosphere had completely changed, giving us a beautiful way to finish their engagement photos.
We ended the session right in front of Montage Laguna Beach, where Wes and Melinda were staying for the weekend.
I loved that we were able to include the resort in their photographs, too. Years from now, they'll have photos not only of the moment Wes proposed, but also of the place where they celebrated this next chapter together.
