A Woods Cove Proposal in Laguna Beach | Austin + Kyra

There are some places that become more than just a beautiful spot on the map. Woods Cove was one of those places for Austin and Kyra.

For years, this intimate little beach in Laguna Beach had been their go-to escape from Los Angeles. When they needed a quick staycation, a change of scenery, or simply a beach day away from the city, they would make their way down the coast to Laguna.

So when Austin decided it was time to ask Kyra to marry him, Woods Cove felt like the perfect place to begin their next chapter.

And honestly, I could completely relate.

My husband and I used to do the exact same thing when we lived in LA. When we needed a little break from the city, Laguna Beach was one of our favorite places to escape to for the day. There's something about being able to leave LA behind, get down to the coast, and suddenly feel like you're somewhere completely different.

That made photographing Austin and Kyra's proposal at Woods Cove feel especially meaningful to me.

Why Woods Cove Was the Perfect Proposal Location

Woods Cove has a completely different feeling from some of the more well-known Laguna Beach locations.

It's intimate, tucked along the coastline, and feels a little more like a secret escape than a major tourist destination. For a couple who had already made this beach part of their story together, it was incredibly personal.

And that's one of my favorite things about helping couples plan proposals in Laguna Beach.

The most beautiful location isn't always the most obvious one. Sometimes it's the place that already means something to the two of you.

For Austin and Kyra, that was Woods Cove.

Planning Austin's Surprise Proposal

When you're photographing a surprise proposal, there is so much happening behind the scenes that the couple being proposed to never sees.

The timing has to work. The location needs to feel natural. We need to make sure I'm in the right place without giving anything away. And once the moment happens, everything changes in an instant.

For Austin, the goal was to keep everything feeling completely natural while bringing Kyra to a place that already felt familiar to them.

That made Woods Cove an especially beautiful choice.

Rather than creating an elaborate setup that might have felt out of character, the proposal could simply become part of a place they already loved visiting together.

The Moment She Said Yes

And then came the moment Austin had been waiting for.

The anticipation, the realization, the emotion, and finally the excitement of knowing they were officially engaged.

These are the moments I love most about photographing proposals.

Yes, I want to create beautiful portraits and photographs of the location. But I also want to document everything that happens around the big moment — the expressions, the reactions, the little touches, the way you look at each other afterward.

Those are the photographs that can take you right back to how it actually felt.

After the proposal, we took some time to explore the coastline around Woods Cove and photograph Austin and Kyra together.

This part of a proposal session is always one of my favorites because the pressure is gone. The secret has been revealed, the big question has been answered, and suddenly there's just this incredible excitement between the two of you.

I love giving couples enough direction to feel comfortable while leaving plenty of room for the candid moments to happen naturally.

We walked along the coastline, took in the views, and photographed the quieter moments between them — the kind of photographs that feel less like posing and more like remembering.

A Laguna Beach Proposal That Was Personal From the Beginning

What made Austin and Kyra's proposal so special wasn't simply that Woods Cove is beautiful.

It was that Woods Cove already belonged to their story.

It had been their little escape from Los Angeles long before it became the place where Austin proposed.

I think that's what makes a proposal photograph so much more meaningful. Years from now, they won't just remember a beautiful beach. They'll remember the place they used to escape to together, the day they came back to it for one of the biggest moments of their lives, and the beginning of their life as an engaged couple.

And I'm so honored that I got to be there to document it.
